Spells That Are Fucking Metal: Ocean of Wounds

Image
Sometimes there's just not enough blood. Blood on the ground. Blood on the walls. Blood on the ceiling. Blood on basically everything. Well, here's the solution you've been waiting for! Like all Weird Magic spells, it does not have an obvious, easy application. It's messy, terrifying, has awful consequences, and a very imbalanced power level which can make it either amazing or terrible, depending on how strategically it is used. But basically if you want to rain blood, well, here you go. Abbath by Abbath Ocean of Wounds No./Area Affected: 10’ x CL area up to a range of 10’ x CL Duration: Until ended by caster. The suffering of the world is not fleeting. It is not past, not gone; it persists to pollute the world over eons. Its crushing id is perceptible in dark moments and brushes with death. It is an ocean in which all things will drown, choking. Ocean of Wounds opens this glut of gore and pain, releasing it back into the delicate, placid plane of realit...

Spells That Are Fucking Metal: Corridor of Chameleons

Image
Here, have a creepy alien skin-swapping spell. It'll come in handy. Inspired by Meshuggah, who just seem to have the best song titles for writing spells. Corridor of Chameleons No./Area Affected: 1 subject Duration: Permanent Many people wish they could be another person, live their life, have their possessions, be surrounded by their loved ones. There are those who can, and who do such things- replacing others while no one notices, taking their forms and following their mannerisms so well that even their closest friends and family could never notice. These beings come from far away, but it is possible to find them, to walk the long path to their home, and to learn their ways. By entering the Corridor, the subject may interact with these creatures and trade their form in exchange for the ability to take the skin of another person, whom they must know. They will take this form permanently; it is impossible to revert to their original appearance. In their new fo...

Spells that are Fucking Metal: Underneath Orion's Sword

Image
Given that the cold, alien, deadly universe is such a theme of LotFP, it seems appropriate that it should be fleshed out. While leaving it amorphous and unknowable is fitting, in my campaign it's established that science and magic can simultaneously be true, and of course magic can contradict itself. So there's nothing wrong with adding canonical details! Since I love mythology, I wanted to include something with a classical feel and add a weird touch. Underneath Orion's Sword implies a myth, an alternate history, and uses a monster I've posted on the blog as well. Worldbuilding via spell. This entry was inspired by a result on the table in the back of VAM!, a resource I urge you to use if you're going to write your own Weird Magic spells but just can't find a good metal song title or come up with something on your own. The song is by a band called Pyogenesis, who I hadn't heard of but are pretty fucking awesome now that I've checked them out. ...

Review: Tower of the Stargazer by James Edward Raggi IV/Spells That Are Fucking Metal: The Butcher's Bargain

Image
Animals As Leaders by Animals As Leaders Science-Wizards would probably listen to prog metal. Spoilers: if you intend to play in this module, avoid this review Tower of the Stargazer, written by James Edward Raggi IV, the publisher of Lamentations of the Flame Princess himself, is an adventure intended to serve as an introduction to old-school style gaming. The tone is somewhat more grounded than a lot of other LotFP adventures, featuring astronomy and real-world technology alongside magic. It offers a dangerous, lightning-blasted tower for players to explore, filled with all kinds of traps, puzzles and hazards, with only a few opportunities for combat. The adventure punishes rash decisions harshly, but holds great rewards for thorough and clever adventurers. When I ran it, it ended in a total party kil...

Spells That Are Fucking Metal: White Nights Of Murder

Image
There's an excellent novella by Joe R. Lansdale called The Drive-In which chronicles the descent of a normal night at the movies into chaos, dementia and mass murder as the result of an ominous meteor attracting the attention of strange beings. What ensues is the formation of tribes, mass insanity, mutation, and lots and lots of murder. I highly recommend it, and the sequel isn't bad either. Avoid the third one, though. Anyway, I've always thought it was pretty cool and worthy of adaptation of some kind. When I found the title White Nights of Murder by one of my favorite bands, Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats, I knew I had an opportunity. So here it is, a mass-hysteria inducing chaos & murder spell that will change your campaign to a psychedelic slaughterfest for a couple of in-game nights. It also bears mentioning that Uncle Acid has an excellent concept album based on giallo murderer films, which you should check out above. One of my favorite albums of 2015. ...

Cantrips

Under the rules of my Lore skill , Magic-Users gain unique mini-spells as they advance. Each time they gain a level of the skill, the Ref and the player collaborate to customize a cantrip that will be for that character only, reflecting their talents and discoveries of the occult. I gave several examples in the original post, but here are some more to help Referees flesh out NPC Magic-Users or roll on if a player would rather progress randomly. Details such as range, duration, and other variables have been intentionally omitted and are up to the Ref to determine based on any relevant factors such as distance, level, skill level, hit dice, or other circumstances. This table will be added to periodically, and readers are welcome to make their own suggestions as well. d20 Cantrips 1 Bond: Create a strong static bond between objects, causing them to resist gravity or attempts to separate them. A successful ability check can pull the objects apart, and the effect end on i...
